Motorcycle Permit Assessment

Course Outline

The Motorcycle Permit Assessment Program is a compulsory component of the VicRoads Motorcycle Graduated Licence System (step 1 of 3).
This accredited VicRoads MPA program is designed for those who wish to obtain their Motorcycle Learners Permit.

The VicRoads MPA program is aimed at beginner riders, however is a compulsory program for ALL participants regardless of current skill level.

This program is conducted over 2 consecutive days.
(8.00am – 3.30pm approx)

Trainer / Student Ratio

1:5 (maximum)

  1. Be 18 years old
  2. Hold a current Victorian Drivers Licence / Learner Permit
  3. Provide two forms of identity for enrolment paperwork
    (Drivers licence, Medicare, Passport, Birth Cert etc.)
  4. Must notify staff of any medical conditions/medication taken and receive Medical approval from VicRoads.
    NOTE: VicRoads require all students to declare if they have any Medical Conditions and/or taking any prescribed medications.
    A medical report will be required to be submitted to VicRoads Medical for approval prior to the program commencement. Please talk to the friendly Aust-Link staff about VicRoads Medical declarations and requirements

  5. Pass Eyesight test conducted by Aust-Link.
  6. Purchase and be familiar with the VicRoads Rider handbook (available at VicRoads in store/online)
  7. MUST wear appropriate protective clothing with full skin coverage for riding motorcycles.
  • Approved helmet
  • Gloves (not fingerless)
  • Pants (Jeans or trade work pants)
  • Long sleeves (Jacket/Jumper)
  • Decent footwear that covers ankle
    (NO slip on or open toe)
  1. Be proficient in English
  • Identify any areas where participants may need
    additional support
  • Minimum written and /or oral English level

Participants receive skills training and then testing as required by VicRoads office to receive their motorcycle learners’ permit.

The program includes:

Day 1

  • Basic riding skills.
  • How to use the controls; mirrors, brakes, gears, etc.
  • How to get moving, stop, turn and change gears
  • A discussion on the unique aspects of motorcycling
  • An introduction to roadcraft tactics
  • What to look for when buying riding gear
  • Motorcycle knowledge assessment

Day 2

  • Slow speed manoeuvring skills
  • Steering and cornering
  • Emergency braking
  • Strategies for safe riding
  • A simulated road ride (off-road assessment on the training pad)
